Using a nationwide cohort of more than 439,000 critically ill patients, we found that intermediate care units (IMCUs) play a central role in the management of adults aged ≥80 years.
🔎 One key finding: a step-down strategy from ICU to IMCU was associated with improved one-year survival, highlighting the importance of tailored critical care pathways for older adults.
